Accounts and organizations

You can use local workspaces without signing in. An account is required for organization features such as Chat, calls, shared documents, shared spaces, and organization-backed Work.

You can use local workspaces without signing in. An account is required for organization features such as Chat, calls, shared documents, shared spaces, and organization-backed Work.

Sign in or continue locally

On the welcome screen, sign in or create an account to use connected features. Select Continue locally when you only want to work with files on this computer.

To sign in later, open Settings → Account. The same section shows the current authentication state and lets a signed-in user sign out.

Update your profile

When signed in, Settings → Account contains the profile controls:

  • upload a PNG, JPEG, or WebP avatar up to 2 MB, or remove the current avatar;
  • edit the display name and username, then select Save profile;
  • review the email verification status and resend the verification email when that action is available;
  • connect a Google identity or review the connected Google status;
  • review the account email, organization, role, user ID, and creation date.

The account details are informational. Changing the active organization does not change the folder used by the current workspace.

Set your availability

Choose an availability mode in Settings → Account:

  • Automatic shows you as online while active and away after five minutes of inactivity.
  • Away stays active until you choose another mode.
  • Do not disturb shows that state and mutes alerts on signed-in devices.
  • Appear offline keeps messaging connected while showing you as offline.

Availability is used by connected collaboration features. Local file editing continues in every mode.

Switch organizations

An organization supplies the member list used by Chat, sharing, calls, and collaborative Work. If your account belongs to more than one organization, use the organization switcher in the vertical sidebar to change the active one.

Switching changes the organization-scoped people, conversations, shared items, and Work data shown in those features. It does not move or rename local workspace files.

Secure the account

Open Settings → Security to review multi-factor authentication controls. Follow the on-screen setup carefully. Do not share a verification code or account security code with another person.
